We Fought Together.

We fought together once
At the pass of Thermopyle,
We had no rank and file
An invisible army we were,
Opposing any foe that marched against
Our wall of courage and resolve..

We fought together once with great Achilles
In the boundless plains of Troy
We were together when the firefighters scaled
The Twin Towers,
Isengard and Barad-Dur
And the wall of ancient battlements
Against the wisdom of a nymph who was my mother.

Juxtaposed we were together
At the battle of Jericho
And had all the faith that brings down walls
But the blow of a trumpet had me all but  broken.
Where is all gone now? The hope
The trust, the courage
To wake up in the morning and face up
To another day.

Your phone calls do not ease
The notions of past misery
So that with all the gloom of wintry nights
I sing alone this lonely song
In the corner of old triumphs
Echoing the chasm within
The sorrow
And the depth
Of an empty universe without.
